Deacon Nicodemus and Matushka Judith had another child, Nicodemus. He suffered from Sleep Apnea and needed a CPCP for treatment. This was not available and Nicodemus fell asleep in the Lord this year - just before Great Lent - at the age of 13. May his memory be eternal!
Father Deacon attended Mt. Edgecumb Boarding School in Sitka, AK. Completing his High School education there, he graduated in 1981. He became interested in seminary during the ordination of Father Stephen Heckman to the Holy Diaconate and the blessing of the new church in his home village of Pilot Station shortly following his graduation. In 1982, he came to seminary for the freshman year. When he went home for the following summer, he met Judith in his home town. They married in 1984. He did not return to seminary until 13 years later. During that time, Nicodemus worked as a Public Service Safety Officer (Policeman) for 3 years; joined the Alaska Wild Land Firefighters; and took carpentry classes. After Archbishop Gregory's retirement as the Bishop of Alaska, Nicodemus attended the consecration of Archimandrite Innocent to the episcopacy - becoming the Bishop of Alaska, replacing His Grace GREGORY - on April 16, 1995. When the new bishop came to the Yukon River Region for the Annual Regional Conference, it was mentioned that His Grace would be teaching at St. Herman Seminary. This moved Nicodemus to return to St. Herman Seminary and there he was ordained as a Subdeacon on February 25, 1996. He was at seminary for 2 more years, but did not graduate. On January 19, 1997, he was ordained to the Diaconate and immediately traveled with His Grace, INNOCENT as his Deacon and remained in that capacity until Bishop INNOCENT passed to Memory Eternal during Bright Week, 2002. Deacon Nicodemus, returned to Pilot Station once again and worked there as a Tribal Administrator. He served as Deacon for the loved parish in his village and continued his firefighting work. He also worked at commercial fishing on the lower Yukon since 1998.
Last year, His Grace NIKOLAI came to the Yukon and said he wanted his Deacons to complete their education at St. Herman Theological Seminary. Nicodemus told Judith they would have to move to Kodiak and they arrived on her birthday - February 23, 2007 - with their 2 youngest sons. It was very hard at first, but they have slowly adjusted. He will participate in the Substance Abuse Certification Classes in June. Judith worked as the clerk in the village corporation store for 12 years. She is now sewing Kuspuks - native dresses - to sale. Their only source of income now is Food Stamps. He is starting ivory carving. They are very thankful for a sponsor to help them through his final year of studies so that he will be able to continue serving our Lord's Alaska Vineyard in this clergy vocation
