Michael Nicholai

mageBirth Date: 3-19-76
Name Day: 11-8, Archangel Michael
Home: Pilot Station
Population: 600
Heritage: Yup'ik Eskimo
Home Parish: Holy Resurrection, Fr. Stephen Heckman

Spouse: Anne
Children: Xenia, Dimitri, Olga, David, Cleo

Michael married Anne in 1995, graduated from Pilot Station high school the next year, and came immediately that fall to St Herman Seminary for the first time. Since there was no scholarship program available at that time, his family did not have enough money to continue, and so he returned to the village of Kwethluk to work as a carpenter.

Once he was back in the Kuskokwim delta, the desire to return to seminary never left Michael. About two years ago, he began to discuss the possibility with his wife, and after discussing it as a family, they decided that everyone was ready to come back and finish seminary. Michael was very inspired by the church when he was a boy, and became involved in it from an early age, both as an altar boy and singing in the youth choir. *Matushka Olga of Kwethluk gave him good advice about being in the altar: he should be very respectful of what he was doing, since he was serving like an angel when he helped the priest at the altar.

As a returning student, Michael has very realistic expectations of seminary life. He knows what some of the challenges will be, and comes with the full support of his entire family. Since his wife is the daughter of a priest, she is also very ready for the future, knowing what she will face as a future Matushka.

Michael and Anne said that the biggest challenge they faced as a family was moving to a new place and meeting new people, especially for their children in the big city school. He is looking forward to helping the community out, especially with his carpentry skills. When asked about his plans for the future, Michael shrugged and said, "I don't make plans like that: What if something happens to you suddenly? God knows the future ... priest's have a big burden, but if that is your cross, you should pick it up and follow Christ."

*Matushka Olga is Olga Michael from Kwethluk. She is the first native woman in America being discussed for glorification.
