Anastasia Nicolai

Birth Date: November 12, 1982
Home:  Kwethluk, AK
Home Parish: St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church
Parish Priest: Father Alexander Larson

Anastasia graduated from Kwethluk High School in 2001.  She first attended college in Juneau but did not finish.  Her wish was always to attend St. Herman Theological Seminary in Kodiak.  Anastasia’s father is the Very Reverend Martin Nicolai.  He was the priest in Kwethluk for many years and is well known throughout AK for his work with Orthodox Liturgical Music. Anastasia took one semester off and worked at a store in Kwethluk for half a year until then going back to college – University of Fairbanks in Bethel.  In 2003/04, her father came to teach Liturgical Music, Church History, and Church Doctrine at St. Herman Theological Seminary.  She moved there with the family and attended college at University of Alaska – Anchorage in Kodiak.  She returned to Bethel with her family after one year and continued her studies back at Bethel until enrolling at St. Herman Theological Seminary in 2005.  She feels that her work will be in Liturgical Music.

Anastasia is attending college part-time in Kodiak as she is also a full-time seminarian.
Keeping up with the homework the first year was very hard.  She thinks it is easier this year.  Her sister is married to one of the seminarians and having family there with her keeps her close to home.  She also feels this helps her with the classes. Her parents really support her being at St. Herman’s.  She worked as an assistant at the “Elder Home” last summer – cleaning and washing clothes, etc.  An Orthodox missionary team traveled to  Ouzinki this summer and she helped them with the Youth Camp.  The theme for this team was “The Creed”.  This is being continued for the Sunday School program at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Kodiak and with seminary youth.

Other than her support from our Adopt a Seminarian project, Anastasia says that most comes from her RFD check.  She also has a cousin who sends her a little to help her with living expenses.  Collections are taken at times by the local parish in Kodiak for the seminarians.  Anastasia said, “Just as long as I have a roof over my head, I’m OK.”
