Anders graduated from Napaskiak High School in 1997, after which he attended the University of Alaska Fairbanks Kuskokwim Campus in Bethel to study in the Information System Specialist (computer) program, since he really enjoys computers. He met his wife Olga at a summer youth camp while he was in high school, and they married in September, 2000. Anders worked with computers for a number of years in Bethel, but eventually gave up the job in order to return to the subsistence lifestyle that he knew best.
As a boy in Napskiak, Anders always admired the village priest, Fr. Philip Alexie, and at an early age decided that he wanted to be like him when he grew up. His father, a subdeacon, served to further inspire Anders toward a life in the service of the Church. His mother, a school-teacher, is also fully supportive of his desire for higher education here at the seminary. Anders came to St. Herman because he wanted to learn to serve other people --- a goal he hopes to achieve by a careful study of the Scriptures.
The city of Kodiak is very different from the Kuskogwim delta, and pulling his children out of the village environment was one of the biggest challenges for Anders and his family. The change from a subsistence life-style of hunting, trapping, and picking berries to the academic rigor of a seminary has been difficult for his family. Also, his two school-aged children knew no English when they arrived in Kodiak, so being in an all-English classroom has been quite an adjustment for them. He says it was very hard at the beginning, since everyone was homesick for family and friends that they had left behind, but it is much easier now, since they are an established part of the seminary community.
This year will be an exciting one for Anders and his family. Three of his four children are now in school, and his wife, Olga, is taking two English classes at Kodiak College and working part-time as the seminary cook. He looks forward to continued success at the seminary.
